FINALLY…. D’Angelo has finally surfaced and IS ON TOUR! As an Entertainment Publicist and owner of an Entertainment Firm (www.krprmedia.com), the discussion from clients and promoters for booking D’Angelo have been great. However, his rate was over $250,000 per show. No new promoter I spoke with wanted to pay that amount, even though, I knew he would be a sell out! However, while watching TMZ’, story about his weight, OMG! I was like, “Now we know why he did not want to be on tour… his weight!” In fact, during a BET performance by D’Angelo in 2012 (12 years since he has performed) social networks and bloggers bombarded the internet with statements about his physical appearance. His noticeable midsection, which D’Angelo kept concealed under a sleeveless T-shirt and vest for the entire performance still his size was apparent and could not be avoided. Also, he did perform at the 2012 Essence Music Festival in all black, sporting a fedora, leather vest and black boots. But the TMZ feature showed D’Angelo a bit more thicker. So I thought, “Why would he come back now!” The answer: D’Angelo is releasing his next album According to Kevin Liles of KWL Management (D’Angelo’s manager), he informed Billboard that the album “is 99 percent done.”
There’ll be an album this year: there’s 14 tracks so far, we might have a couple of bonus tracks, but all the recordings are basically done and we’re mixing and mastering now. Definitely, he’ll be back, he said.
Liles also stated that D’Angelo will tour behind the project in the fall.
“We’ll probably start an international tour in October (which he has started), we’ll come back [to the States].
But will D’Angelo’s weight be a factor in his record sales, bookings, concert attendees? In the past, the singer reportedly couldn’t go on stage without having hordes of screaming women demand he take off his shirt. That will not be the case on this tour! In fact, it will be interesting to see how his image effects booking cancellations. While D’Angelo will have to rely on his musical talent… that voice; it will take a minute for the public to get through the NEW LOOK, and to hear the music. I have to say that D’Angelo still looked great at his 2012 performances. His appearance was not as shocking. I am curious… when he was booked, and the booker finally seen him, did they say, “I did not book this D’Angelo!”, “Where is the D’Angelo I booked!” WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS?
