Rigged Elections: The Implications of Donald Trump’s Public Assertions
To say that this presidential campaign season is “something else” is probably understating this fact. Of course, the number of issues seen as important from one person to the next is a matter of opinion.
Before diving into the implications of Trump’s assertion that elections are rigged, there are several related facts that need addressing before what should we know about the probabilities of a rigged presidential election:
Why does Trump’s claim that 2016 presidential elections are “rigged against him” so affective with his targeted audiences?
- a) As an experienced and, successful television entertainer (The Apprentice”) Trump acquired the ability to assess an audience’s attitude and acceptance of the manner he delivered some statement or decision during the show. This became an effective tool for use when addressing when addressing his supporters while campaigning for President of the United States.
- b) In addition to the skill cited above, Mr. Trump is skilled in the art and use of propaganda. Propaganda is:
Communication aimed at influencing the thinking, emotions, of actions of a group or public.1
Propaganda is not necessarily true nor false. In use. The political propagandist employs propaganda in an attempt a cultivating support for his/her policies, this may include distortion of facts and in some cases a lie that contains a kernel of truth therein. Consider Trump’s assertion that the “political system and Washington, D.C. is corrupt.” The magnitude of corruption is never explained, that is left to the imagination of his audience. Repetition of this assertion becomes truth/reality for those exposed to this message. “ Hillary” “Hillary is Corrupt” suggests she is unfit to be POTUS and repeated enough results in cries of “jail her, lock her up.” The point here is Trump’s utilization of propaganda is effective, to say the least.
While Trump’s message that “the elections are rigged” America’s media and pundits are slowly coming to the realization that the effect of Trump’s rhetoric on his highly emotional supporters may have serious implications for America’s post electoral environment. What might be in the offing should Mr. Trump should lose the election?
Should Trump lose the election the implications for the future of this country are chilling. Threats and shouts from Trump supporters to “assassinate the B…h” (Secretary Clinton). One woman was heard to threaten “revolution” at one of his rallies. And, what of the promises Mr. Trump has made during his campaign, e.g., “deport 11 million illegals” “build a wall, Mexico pays” “no Muslim immigration” and what about “bringing jobs back to America?” what kind of jobs? Trump promises repeal of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). With nothing to replace it with, what can we expect from his supporters when they discover they no longer have access to affordable health care insurance. Stand by as it all remains to be seen.
