The United States of America vs. Leroy Baca
The former Los Angeles Sheriff, Leroy Baca, is on trial for making false statements, conspiracy and obstruction of justice. Based on the charges there is no way that the jury could return anything but a guilty verdict, the irony of the case is that Leroy Baca had already pled guilty and admitted the facts, however, when he was not given the sweetheart sentence of six months the judge allowed him to withdraw his guilty plea forcing him to trial on the charges. All things considered, how could his attorneys maintain that he is not guilty after he already had pled guilty. Most people would as why an innocent man would plead guilty?
If an innocent man was housed in Baca’s overcrowded downtown jail along with nine others in a celled designed four, locked in that cell for 23 and a half house each day, subjected to daily abuse from the sadistic gang of deputy sheriffs, stripped naked and made to stand, “Nuts to butt,” in a dehumanizing manner, beat with black metal flashlights, pepper sprayed, tasered, forced to eat all of your meals in the bathroom, denied medical attention, then I could understand how he and all the other criminal defendants who were subjected to the abuses at his jail would have gladly pled guilty to killing Able, Kennedy, and any unsolved crime simply to be free. People who have been inside the Los Angeles County Jail while Baca was the Sherriff describe the abuse as level eight, most of those same people won’t hesitate to tell you that the reign under the late Sherman Block was worst. There has to be some fairness with respect to defendants who can’t afford to post bail- this same fairness should support innocent until proven guilty. I empathize with the fact that Baca has onset Alzheimer’s; does this excuse the prosecution- I think not. A question was raised on talk radio regarding why it seems that quite a few people in power like the Sherrif Mike Corona of Orange County, numerous Governors, Congressman and now the Sherrif of Los Angeles. Although they entertained various theories me personally I believe it has to do understanding that the “why.” Most people who gain power want to retain power and when cornered or faced with the belief that they will lose power they will do Anything to keep from losing it; Without a guilty verdict, there will be, No justice, No peace.
